Bush to beach
Bush to beach was successful again this year with 40 Aboriginal children from Brewarrina who arrived on Friday January 29, 2016 and returned on Monday February 1, 2016.
The letter below is from Kelsie Lovett, the mother of Keira Lee who attended the weekend. She provided this letter of feedback and has given us permission to circulate where required.
Hi Eddie,
I'm just providing some feedback on the "Bush to Beach" program. I can not begin to express enough how grateful I am that Keira was chosen for this program. Keira was very fortunate to have learnt so much, as she was new to the ocean it was an eye opening experience. Keira has learnt many skills, mostly survival and safety skills, which will be applied as much as we can in the bush. I would recommend this program for any children eager to learn. The skills Keira learnt are amazing and the people she met and made friends with made her trip extra special. Keira not only left with a little knowledge about Australia's oceans but also was made aware of everyday safety. Keira was lucky enough to mix with new children and done so really well and made lots of new friends. This program has also helped boost Keira's confidence and socialisation skills as she doesn't get to mix with other children often since we live so far out of town. To all the lifesavers I can not thank you enough for all your hard work!
You may not know but we are currently 60km from the nearest town (Brewarrina) on a horrible gravel road. I only have a small vehicle so I find it hard to access the nearest town. I have had to resort to do home school with Keira as it was too much on my vehicle and on Keira ( she was always tired & irritable). We live on a property called "Wirricanna", it consists of 24,000 acres of cotton and grazing farming. At the moment it is currently dry so we have no water to grow cotton.
Keira, Tyler (Keira's younger brother) and I have to travel in to Brewarrina, Sometimes Nyngan ( 248km from Brewarrina ) & Dubbo (410km from Brewarrina) to attend Doctor & specialists appointments. It costs us a lot in fuel each week for speech and doctors appointments.
I think this program is a great program (by far the best) for children that live in the bush to experience city life and the beach. I will be sending Keira again next year if this program is still run.
Kind regards,
Kelsie Lovett
